We knew it would be tough
At the end of the 2016 /2017 season Southport & Birkdale Squash first team finished in one of the relegation places in the North-West Counties Squash League (NWCSL) 1st division. However, a change in league rules allows promoted sides from division two to decline their place in the top league. This is normally due to the high cost of competing in a league which boasts highly ranked national and world ranked players. Our registered players now include Daryl Selby (World ranked 15), Emyr Evans WR 122, Laura Massaro Women's WR number 7, elite coach Danny Massaro, Mark Broekman, Lucas Hughes plus club players Matty Sherman (Team Captain), Arron Ken, Howard Nuttall and Dave Porter.
The 2018/2019 season got off to a bad start with a heavy defeat at Wigan it also saw the last appearance of Howard Nuttall who had only recently undergone heart surgery. But with 4 of our 15 losses by 3 matches to 2 our final position was only decided on the last match. Having reversed the defeat by Wigan by winning 5 -0 at home we were one place above them in the league. The last match for us was against the top of the league Warrington whilst Wigan played bottom of the league Bowdon 2. The result of these two matches meant Wigan moved above S & B out of the relegation places.
But, as in the past couple of year's, two division 2 winners have declined their promotion which leaves us again being reprieved. Final League Table
